SoleSisters

SoleSisters’ website and app addresses the fact that it can be difficult to find a community of like-minded female runners. Within the website, there is a “shop” page. When women wear SoleSisters merchandise out in public, it allows them to recognize one another as part of the SoleSisters community. It also allows for conversations to start between those who do and do not know about SoleSisters and their mission, therefore spreading awareness and building the community.

The app allows for further connection between members. Women can post and review runs and routes, post “heads up” messages about road closings and unsafe areas, and find groups and events near them. The calendar feature allows groups to post their meetups for new members to join them and shows events put on by local running stores and/or the local SoleSisters chapter.

To find out about SoleSisters, QR code stickers can be posted on telephone and light poles, and posters can be posted in local stores. Scanning the QR codes lead to a Linktree that gives users the option to go to the website, app, or Instagram.

The Fast and Fabulous guidebook gives information on the basics of running as a woman, including clothing, nutrition, training, racing, and more. In between each section are inspiring and/or funny quotes about running. The cover image utilizes a duotone, just like the Instagram posts. Instead of the standard white pages with black text, the pages have a subtle pink tint to them, and the text is the dark teal that is part of the brand’s color palette. Were it to be fully fleshed out and sold, it would be found online at Amazon and the SoleSisters website, as well as in person at local running stores. Take a closer look at each page below!

The SoleSister’s Instagram campaign addresses the issue of harassment. Posts feature jarring statistics and firsthand testimonials from female runners that have been victims of harassment. Captions are calls-to-action with the hashtag #SistersforSafety, which women can use to share their own stories and bring awareness to harassment. Images are treated with duotones using the brand colors to keep a cohesive look and feel.

In this social design project, I addressed safety concerns for female runners and pedestrians. I created a strong brand and social group called SoleSisters to empower, protect, and connect women. In addition to branding, three deliverables were developed to address three different problems: a clear social media campaign against harassment, a website and app to connect members, and a printed guidebook. This impactful project was awarded four bronze ADDY awards in the student section at the regional level in 2024.

The SoleSisters branding features feminine pinks contrasted by a dark teal and light blue. The typeface used, Agrandir, was chosen for its versatility, legibility, and slight playfulness that bring character to each aspect of the project. These branding elements are used throughout the three deliverables to create a cohesive look and feel to the brand.
